Planning an Algonquin Park elopement in Ontario? Brianna and Eric’s full-day fall adventure included private vows overlooking the autumn colors at Booth’s Rock, champagne and trail snacks, a ferry ride back to Bartlett Lodge, a first dance on the dock, canoeing at blue hour, campfire cake, and nighttime portraits under the stars. Basically, an entire day built around the things they actually love doing together!

Okay, picture this!

You wake up in a cozy lodge tucked inside Algonquin Park. There is no ballroom downstairs, no giant guest list waiting for you, and absolutely nobody asking where the seating chart is.

Instead, you’ve got hiking boots, fall leaves, your favorite trail snacks, a canoe, and the person you’re about to marry.

THAT was the plan for Brianna and Eric’s Algonquin Park elopement!

Well…sort of.

When these two first came to us, they didn’t have an exact ceremony spot picked out. There was no color-coded itinerary or secret Pinterest board containing every detail of the day.

They knew they wanted Algonquin Park!

Fall colors, privacy, hiking, and an incredible view were all high on the list. However, they did not want to spend their entire wedding day trekking through the wilderness in wedding clothes.

Cool!

We can absolutely work with that!

Eventually, we landed on Booth’s Rock for their ceremony and Bartlett Lodge for their stay. Once those pieces fell into place, the rest of the day started turning into something that felt ridiculously Brianna and Eric.

Private vows overlooking the fall colors. Champagne and trail snacks. A ferry ride. A first dance on the dock. Canoeing at blue hour. Campfire cake. Stars!

COME ON!!!

This is exactly why we love elopements!

Algonquin Park elopement in Ontario

First, We Need to Talk About Brianna + Eric

Before there was an Algonquin Park elopement, there were two people who somehow attended the same high school in Orleans, Ontario without knowing each other.

Excuse us?!

Brianna grew up in Cornwall before moving to Ottawa in grade eight. Meanwhile, Eric was born and raised in Ottawa and had lived in the same Orleans home his entire life.

Same area. Same high school.

Still no Brianna + Eric!

Their paths finally crossed while they were both working at Canadian Tire. From there, they built a life that is equal parts outdoor adventure and aggressively good cozy-night-at-home energy.

Camping and hiking have taken them through provincial parks across Ontario, including Algonquin, Killarney, Killbear, Bon Echo, and Bruce Peninsula. Brianna also picked up golf a few years ago, which gave them another excuse to spend time outside together.

At home, things get a little cozier!

Brianna loves a good thriller, Eric is a gamer, and both of them are VERY into board games. Their lineup includes Wingspan, Carcassonne, Play Nine, Kingdomino, Ticket to Ride, and Exit Games.

Then there’s Franklin!

Their Aussiedoodle is goofy, affectionate, wildly energetic, and very much their baby. Unfortunately, he couldn’t physically join them in Algonquin.

Don’t worry!

Franklin still found a way into the wedding.

We’ll get there. 👀

Why an Algonquin Park Elopement Felt So Right

At first, Brianna and Eric considered having a traditional wedding.

However, the more they thought about everything that came with it, the more they realized they were adding a lot of pressure around something that was actually pretty simple.

They wanted to marry each other somewhere they loved!

That’s it.

Algonquin Park already fit naturally into their life together. These two camp, hike, explore Ontario, and genuinely enjoy being outside, so choosing the park made SO much sense.

Once they let go of everything they felt like a wedding was supposed to include, the plan got a whole lot clearer.

Private elopement.

Just the two of them.

Algonquin Park in the fall!

Okayyyyyy, now we have something to work with!

Planning an Algonquin Park Elopement When You Have No Idea Where to Start

This is actually one of our FAVORITE places to start with a couple!

Seriously.

You do not need to contact us with exact ceremony coordinates, accommodation reservations, a detailed timeline, and a complete understanding of Algonquin Park logistics.

Brianna and Eric essentially came to us with one big decision already made: We want Algonquin Park!

Perfect! Tell us more!

Privacy mattered, and they loved the idea of an epic lookout. Although hiking was definitely part of their vision, they didn’t want anything huge.

Most importantly, they wanted the experience to feel relaxed.

From there, we started putting the puzzle together!

We helped them narrow down accommodations, choose a ceremony location, think through timing, and figure out how all the pieces would actually connect on the wedding day.

Because finding a beautiful photo online is easy.

Figuring out how you’re going to get there, how long it takes, where you’re parking, what you need to reserve, and whether you’ll still be having fun by the time you arrive?

That’s the part people forget about!

If you’re currently at the “we know we want Algonquin and that’s about it” stage, start with our complete guide to planning an Algonquin Park elopement. We get into the practical side of turning a really pretty idea into a day that actually works.

Eric Already Had Some Experience With This

When Jason and I first met Brianna and Eric, they told us the story of Eric proposing in Italy.

He had a vision!

Amalfi Coast. Beautiful scenery. Romantic proposal.

What could possibly go wrong?!

Well.

There were trains.

They missed one, which threw off their timing and left them a day behind where Eric expected to be. Once they finally reached the area he had planned for the proposal, he discovered there was significantly more hiking involved than anticipated.

Then there were stairs.

Eric fell down the stairs.

Poor Eric! 😭

Everyone survived, Brianna said yes, and now they have an incredible story!

However, the experience also gave them a very useful lesson before they started planning an elopement.

Getting to the pretty place isn’t always as simple as the photo makes it look!

Transportation schedules, parking, hiking times, permits, reservations, weather, and all those tiny logistical details can completely change an experience.

When they told us the story, we immediately bonded over the awkwardness because Jason and I are absolutely not graceful wilderness gazelles either.

Jason is very tall.

Every once in a while, his spatial awareness likes to remind us of that fact.

These are our people!

More importantly, the Italy story helped us understand what Brianna and Eric needed from us. They didn’t want to spend their wedding day wondering whether they’d forgotten something.

They wanted to know someone had already thought it through.

Why We Recommended Bartlett Lodge

Once we understood what Brianna and Eric wanted from their Algonquin Park elopement, Bartlett Lodge made SO much sense!

These two are campers who wanted to stay inside the park. Therefore, something cozy and outdoorsy felt far more like them than a fancy hotel that could have been anywhere.

Bartlett felt like Algonquin!

There were rustic cabins, trails, water, dining, and trees everywhere. You even have to cross the water to get there.

COME ON!!!

Even better, the lodge could become part of the wedding experience instead of simply being somewhere they slept.

That little detail becomes very important later.

There is a canoe involved.

Obviously.

Tea the Night Before Their Elopement

We met Brianna and Eric at Bartlett Lodge the night before their wedding!

Over tea, we walked through the plan one more time, answered questions, and made sure everyone knew what was happening the next day.

Is that the flashiest part of an elopement?

Nope!

Does it make a HUGE difference when you wake up the next morning?

Absolutely!

Brianna and Eric later said in their review that the extra care “really set the tone for a relaxed and meaningful day.”

YES!!!

That is exactly what we want!

The night before your elopement, we’d much rather have you thinking, “Cool, we know what we’re doing tomorrow.”

Not: “WAIT. WHERE ARE WE SUPPOSED TO PARK?!”

Their Wedding Morning Was Just for Them

The morning of their elopement started slowly, and Brianna and Eric chose to keep it completely private.

They got ready together at Bartlett Lodge without us photographing or filming those first few hours.

We LOVE that choice!

Hiring a photographer and videographer doesn’t mean every second of your wedding day suddenly belongs to the camera. Some couples want the whole story documented, while others want certain pieces to stay entirely theirs.

Both are allowed!

By the time we met Brianna and Eric at the Booth’s Rock trailhead, they had already spent a quiet morning together.

Now?

Let’s go get you married!!!

Algonquin Park elopement in Ontario

Hiking to Booth’s Rock in Wedding Clothes

We met Brianna and Eric at the trailhead with Laura, their officiant from True North Ceremonies.

And THANK YOU, ALGONQUIN!

The fall colors were still hanging on!

Their October 1 elopement put us toward the later end of Algonquin’s typical fall-color window, so there was never a guarantee that the leaves would still be showing off for us.

Mother Nature does not care about your wedding Pinterest board.

This time, though?

She DELIVERED!

The trail was surrounded by oranges, yellows, reds, and greens, giving us exactly the crisp Ontario fall feeling we’d hoped to see.

Before heading farther up, we stopped for a few portraits near the bottom.

Because there is also a very practical side to hiking in wedding clothes.

Take some photos before everybody gets sweaty!

We’re romantic.

We’re also realists.

An Adventure Elopement Does NOT Automatically Mean a Giant Hike

Can we talk about this one for a second?!

Brianna and Eric genuinely love hiking, which made including a trail in their wedding day an easy decision.

However, there is a big difference between wanting to hike during your elopement and accidentally turning your wedding into an endurance event.

They wanted the lookout.

They did not want to spend the entire day getting there!

Booth’s Rock gave us that balance.

When we’re recommending locations for an Ontario adventure elopement, the view is only one piece of the decision. We also think about trail difficulty, timing, privacy, accessibility, weather, and everything else you want to fit into the experience.

Adventure should mean doing something that feels exciting to you!

There is no mandatory kilometre count.

If you’re still figuring out whether Algonquin is the right fit, our Ontario elopement photographer guide is another place to wander. We cover more Ontario elopement possibilities there, so you can start comparing what actually feels right for the two of you.

Private Vows Overlooking Algonquin Park

Eventually, we reached the top.

And THIS!!!

This was why we chose Booth’s Rock!

Fall colors stretched across Algonquin below them, while only a handful of other hikers passed through. Thankfully, everyone was incredibly respectful and gave Brianna and Eric plenty of space.

With the park surrounding them, Laura led the two of them through their legal ceremony, vows, and rings.

It was Brianna and Eric, their officiant, us, and an absolutely ridiculous amount of Ontario wilderness.

Like…LOOK AT THIS PLACE!

Having Laura there also meant they didn’t need to think about what happened next. She could guide the ceremony while they stayed focused on each other.

Someone else remembering when the rings happen?

Very luxurious, actually.

And then they were married!!! 🥹

Champagne, Trail Snacks + a Picnic With a View

After the ceremony, there was really only one reasonable thing to do.

Pop the champagne!

Brianna and Eric celebrated near the lookout before settling in for a picnic with some of their favorite trail snacks.

Which, can we say, felt infinitely more like them than trying to recreate a formal wedding meal on top of a lookout?!

This is something we come back to constantly while planning elopements.

You don’t need to add something just because it feels wedding-y!

Bring food you actually like. Choose activities you genuinely enjoy. Build the experience around yourselves rather than creating a tiny outdoor version of a traditional wedding.

Food planning also had a practical side for Brianna and Eric because of a peanut allergy. Therefore, dietary restrictions and potential cross-contamination needed to be considered when we talked about meals and accommodations.

Not glamorous.

Extremely important!

The practical stuff is part of planning a really good day too.

And Then the Loons Showed Up

While we were taking portraits, a group of loons came cruising through!

Because apparently Algonquin Park had additional casting notes.

Loons are already a pretty special sight in Ontario. However, Jason and I have since watched Heated Rivalry, which means there is now no possible way for us to see one without thinking: Stupid Canadian wolf bird.

If you know, YOU KNOW.

If you don’t, please carry on. 😌

Back Down the Trail + Across the Water

Once we’d finished the picnic and another round of portraits, we started hiking back.

By the time we reached the cars and made our way across the water to Bartlett Lodge, the bright fall afternoon had softened into sunset and blue hour.

Suddenly, the whole feeling of the day changed!

The hiking portion was over, and everything became quiet. Still water surrounded the lodge as the sky darkened, giving the evening a completely different energy from the afternoon.

And there was a dock waiting for a first dance!

A First Dance With Absolutely No Audience

Brianna and Eric stepped onto the dock at Bartlett Lodge and started dancing.

There was no DJ or announcement. Nobody was gathered around the dance floor with a phone in the air.

Instead, they had the water, the last bit of evening light, and each other.

That’s it!

Because there wasn’t a reception timeline pushing us toward another scheduled event, they could stay there and actually enjoy it.

No rush.

No audience.

Just their first dance!

We will take that every single time.

Then They Went Canoeing, Because OF COURSE They Did

Remember when we said Bartlett Lodge became part of the experience?

HERE WE GO!

Brianna and Eric love canoeing, and the lodge had canoes available right there. That meant no loading one onto a car, finding another rental spot, or coordinating some complicated wedding-day canoe operation.

They could grab one and GO!

It also made things easier from a Leave No Trace perspective. When moving canoes and other watercraft between lakes, you need to properly clean them to help prevent the spread of invasive species and other unwanted hitchhikers. Having canoes already available at the lake meant one less logistical detail to think about.

As blue hour settled over the water, Brianna and Eric paddled out together in their wedding clothes.

ARE YOU KIDDING US?!

THIS is exactly what we mean when we talk about building an elopement around your actual relationship!

They didn’t go canoeing because somebody told them it would make a cool wedding photo. The photos became meaningful because canoeing was already something they genuinely loved doing together.

Huge difference!

When we’re helping couples choose elopement activities, that’s what we’re looking for. Think about what you’d genuinely have fun doing together, even if nobody ever posted a photo of it.

Start there!

Campfire + Cake + FRANKLIN!!!

Once they were back on land, Bartlett Lodge had a campfire waiting for them.

Already adorable!

Then the cake came out.

And THERE HE WAS.

FRANKLIN!!!

Tiny cake-topper Franklin, but Franklin nonetheless!

Their actual Aussiedoodle couldn’t make the trip, and Brianna and Eric understandably wanted to include such a huge part of their family somehow. After talking through a few ideas, they landed on a custom dog cake topper.

It was PERFECT!

Meaningful wedding details don’t need to be elaborate, expensive, or perfectly coordinated with every other element of the day.

Sometimes it’s a tiny version of your dog sitting on top of your wedding cake.

Frankly, we think that’s better.

Ending Their Algonquin Park Elopement Under the Stars

Eventually, the fire burned lower, the cake disappeared, and Algonquin went dark.

But we weren’t quite finished yet!

For one last adventure, Brianna and Eric headed outside for nighttime portraits underneath the stars.

After a day filled with hiking, vows, champagne, a picnic, water crossings, dancing, canoeing, campfires, and tiny cake dogs, the quiet night sky felt like the PERFECT ending.

There was no giant send-off.

Nobody needed a dramatic reception exit.

Instead, Brianna and Eric finished the night together in the same park they’d chosen because it already fit so naturally into their lives.

Yeah. We REALLY, REALLY love this one!

Planning Your Own Algonquin Park Elopement

Okay, now that we’ve made you want to run away to Algonquin with wedding clothes and a canoe, let’s talk logistics!

Because here’s the funny thing about a relaxed elopement:

There is usually a LOT of planning behind it.

Brianna and Eric’s wedding day didn’t feel easy because we ignored the logistics.

It felt easy because we’d already thought about them!

If you’re currently somewhere around “Algonquin! Fall! Trees! HELP!” our complete Algonquin Park elopement planning guide is a really good next stop. We get deeper into the planning side there, so you don’t have to piece everything together from 47 open browser tabs.

When Is the Best Time for a Fall Elopement in Algonquin Park?

If you’re dreaming about an Algonquin Park elopement surrounded by fall colors, timing matters!

Ontario is huge, and fall doesn’t arrive everywhere at once. Since Algonquin Park sits farther north than Toronto, the leaves typically begin changing earlier.

For couples who really want fall foliage, we generally recommend looking around mid-to-late September.

Brianna and Eric’s October 1 elopement fell later in the typical fall-color window. Fortunately, the leaves held on that year and gave us GORGEOUS color!

Mother Nature was feeling generous.

Of course, nobody can promise exactly when peak foliage will happen. Temperature, rainfall, wind, storms, and changing seasonal patterns can affect both when the leaves turn and how long they stick around.

If fall color is one of your biggest priorities, we’ll help you think strategically about timing. At the same time, we’ll create a plan that doesn’t depend on one exact weather outcome to feel worthwhile.

Because beautiful fall colors are amazing!

Spending your entire wedding day panicking about the leaves?

Not so much.

Still deciding where in Ontario you want to run away together? Our Ontario elopement photographer page is a good place to explore more options and start narrowing down what kind of scenery and experience actually feel like you.

Should You Book an Algonquin Park Elopement Early?

If you’re planning for fall, please don’t wait until the leaves start changing to begin!

Fall is one of those seasons where having more time gives you more options. Brianna and Eric reached out more than a year before their elopement, which meant we had plenty of time to figure out what they wanted and secure important pieces like Bartlett Lodge.

There’s a weird misconception that because an elopement involves fewer people, you can always plan the whole thing next Thursday.

Sometimes you can!

However, if you have your heart set on a particular season, accommodation, location, or experience, planning ahead gives you SO much more freedom.

You can also peek at our elopement travel schedule to see where we’re headed and what we’re already dreaming up!

Where Should You Stay for an Algonquin Park Elopement?

Please don’t treat your accommodations like an afterthought!

Bartlett Lodge became a HUGE part of Brianna and Eric’s wedding experience.

They spent their private morning there and met us at the lodge the night before. Later, they returned across the water, had their first dance on the dock, went canoeing, sat around a campfire, ate cake, and headed outside for star photos.

That’s a lot more useful than:

“Well, there was a bed.”

When we’re recommending accommodations, we’re thinking about how the property connects to everything else you’re planning.

Could staying there eliminate hours of driving? Does it give you access to an activity you love? Is there somewhere beautiful to spend the evening so you aren’t packing up and moving again?

Those decisions might seem small while you’re planning.

On the actual wedding day?

They’re HUGE!

Your accommodation is also one of several pieces to consider when you’re figuring out what the whole experience will cost. If you’re currently staring at a budget wondering what people even spend money on for an elopement, our elopement investment guide walks through that too!

Do You Have to Hike for an Adventure Elopement?

NOPE!!!

Can we put this on a billboard?!

Brianna and Eric hiked because Brianna and Eric like hiking.

That’s the requirement!

You might want a five-hour hike, a ten-minute walk, a canoe trip, an accessible overlook, or something completely different.

Your elopement does not earn additional Adventure Points™ because you suffered more getting there.

We want to find a location and experience that actually fit you!

That’s it.

And if you’re curious what we mean when we say two elopements in the same general destination can still look completely different, go browse our elopement photo and video portfolio. There is no one correct formula here!

What If We Know We Want Algonquin Park but Nothing Else?

Perfect!

Seriously.

You can come to us and say: “We want to get married in Algonquin Park, and that’s about as far as we’ve gotten.”

WE CAN START THERE!

Brianna and Eric didn’t need to know which trail would work best, where they should stay, how everything should be timed, or how all those pieces would fit together.

That’s a huge part of what we do as elopement photographers, videographers, and planning guides!

We’ll help you work through locations, accommodations, ceremony options, vendors, timelines, travel logistics, backup plans, and the overall experience.

Taking beautiful photos and films is one piece of what we do.

Someone still has to figure out how we’re getting to the pretty place!

Eric learned that one in Italy. 😉

If you’re wondering what that actually looks like when you hire us, you can dig into our elopement packages and pricing. We built our experience around more than showing up with cameras because, as we have now established, getting to the pretty place can require A LOT of moving pieces.

Need More Elopement Ideas Before You Decide?

GO FOR IT!

This is the fun part.

You can wander through our elopement blog for more real wedding stories, destination inspiration, planning advice, and plenty of proof that there is no single way an elopement has to look.

Maybe Algonquin is it!

Perhaps another Ontario destination immediately makes your brain go, WAIT. THAT ONE.

Either way, give yourself permission to explore before deciding what your day should become.

Ready to Plan Your Own Algonquin Park Elopement?

If the current state of your wedding plan is: Algonquin. Fall. Trees. Privacy. Maybe canoe???

EXCELLENT!

That’s enough to start!

You don’t need to know which lookout is right for you, where you should stay, or how long everything takes. Figuring out how to turn a collection of things you love into an actual wedding day is part of what we’re here for.

Maybe your Algonquin Park elopement involves hiking to a fall lookout before sharing trail snacks and champagne. Perhaps you’re much more interested in canoeing at blue hour, eating cake beside a campfire, or finding an accessible spot where you can exchange vows without a giant hike.

Or maybe you have an idea we haven’t heard yet.

PLEASE GIVE US THOSE ONES!!!

Want to make sure we’re your kind of weirdos first? Come meet Liz + Jason and get to know the humans who would actually be coming along on this adventure with you.

Then, when your brain has officially reached the “OKAY, WE’RE DOING THIS!” stage, send us a message.

We’ll help you figure out how to make it work, then photograph and film the whole wild, beautiful adventure while you actually get to enjoy it.

Because yes, we want your elopement to look incredible!

But we REALLY want you to have an incredible time living it!!!
