Dreaming about a Lake Minnewanka elopement? Rachel and Russell’s full-day Banff adventure had a little bit of EVERYTHING: an intimate ceremony surrounded by enormous mountain views, rain that turned into a freaking RAINBOW, a styled picnic with family, sunset portraits at Two Jack Lake, dancing beside the water, a very cold dip in an alpine lake, and star photos to finish the night.

Rachel and Russell got married on June 12, right in that magical little window between spring and summer in Banff National Park.

The weather was warm. The lakes had turned that unreal Canadian Rockies blue. Summer crowds hadn’t fully arrived yet.

Basically, mid-June in Banff understood the assignment! ✨

When Rachel and Russell first reached out, Banff was non-negotiable. It was a bucket-list destination for them, and they knew they wanted enormous mountain views and bright blue lakes woven into their wedding day.

What they didn’t have was a list of exact locations.

That’s where we came in!

After learning what mattered most to them, we found and recommended Banff elopement locations that fit their vision. They gave us feedback on what they loved, what they didn’t, and how they wanted the day to feel.

For the ceremony, they wanted BIG mountain views and that wide-open, holy crap, we’re really getting married here feeling.

Lake Minnewanka was the one!

And because Rachel and Russell wanted their wedding to feel slow, relaxed, and full of time to actually enjoy everything, we planned a 12-hour Banff elopement around it.

Spoiler: we used EVERY. SINGLE. BIT.

By the end of the day, these two had been rained on, rainbowed on (is that a word? It is now), fed cake, danced beside a lake, voluntarily walked into freezing alpine water, warmed back up, and headed out AGAIN for stars.

A DAY!!!

A Little Bit About Rachel + Russell

Rachel and Russell met online, hit it off, and pretty quickly realized there was something really good here.

These two love a little bit of both worlds. They’re big on travel, adventure, and experiencing new places together, but they’re equally happy slowing everything down for a cozy day at home with their Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Murphy, affectionately known as Chop.

Their proposal somehow managed to capture their adventurous side and their ability to roll with whatever happens!

Russell planned an entire romantic day at Lake Tahoe, starting with brunch and a spa appointment before a sunset dinner cruise on a paddle boat. The cruise was supposed to be THE moment. He had the ring. He had the plan. He knew exactly when he was going to ask.

But after brunch, they ended up at the beach while waiting for their spa appointment, and it just felt right.

So… plans changed!

Russell went to get down on one knee in the sand, nearly fell over, almost dropped the ring in the process, and still managed to pull off the proposal.

And we kind of love that the perfect moment wasn’t the one he had carefully scheduled.

It was the one that simply felt like theirs!

Which, now that we think about it, feels pretty fitting for two people who would eventually spend their wedding day embracing rain, chasing sunshine, dancing beside a mountain lake, and climbing right into the freezing water in their wedding clothes!

Why Mid-June Was Perfect for Their Lake Minnewanka Elopement

Spring in Banff is a little different from spring in most places.

Mountain weather does whatever mountain weather wants. Snow can linger, temperatures can swing, and those famous turquoise lakes don’t always thaw as early as people expect.

Rachel and Russell wanted the best of both worlds. They didn’t want peak-season crowds, but seeing those beautiful blue alpine lakes was high on their list.

That made mid-June in Banff the sweet spot!

By this point in the season, the lakes are much more likely to have that gorgeous blue color couples picture when they dream about getting married in Banff. At the same time, the busiest part of summer hasn’t fully kicked into gear yet.

Banff will never come with guaranteed privacy. It’s one of the most popular places in Canada for a reason!

However, choosing the right date, time, and locations can make a HUGE difference. If you’re still deciding when your own adventure should happen, our guide to the best time of year to get married in Banff breaks down what each season looks and feels like.

Rachel and Russell wanted mountains, blue water, and room to breathe.

Mid-June gave us all three!

A Slow Wedding Morning at The Juniper Hotel

Rachel and Russell kicked off their Banff elopement day at The Juniper Hotel, and it was SUCH a good fit for them!

They wanted to be close to Banff without waking up smack dab in the middle of all the downtown hustle, so we recommended The Juniper. It sits just outside the main townsite, tucked away from the busiest areas with some pretty freaking gorgeous mountain views.

Oh, and there’s a very cute bistro.

This matters!!! 😂

Their family stayed there too, which meant the morning could unfold without everyone bouncing around Banff trying to find each other before coffee. Instead, people could pop in, hang out, help with little things, and actually enjoy being together.

And that slower pace?

Very much on purpose!

We had 12 hours together, so there was absolutely no need to turn getting ready into an Olympic event. Rachel had time for hair and makeup, hanging out with her parents, opening gifts, soaking in all those tiny wedding-day details, and just being freaking excited that THIS WAS THE DAY!!! 🥹✨

No rushing. No frantic timeline checking. No “okayokayokay we have to GO!”

Just a really sweet, easy morning in the mountains before heading out to get these two married!

Exactly our kind of wedding morning.

A Wedding Dress Five Years in the Making

Okay, we NEED to talk about Rachel’s dress!

She bought it five years before she even met Russell.

Five. Years.

She saw it and basically decided, Yep. That’s the one. I don’t know who I’m marrying yet, but this is the dress.

Manifestation level: EXPERT. ✨

Five years later, she was standing in a hotel room in Banff getting ready to marry Russell in THE dress.

THE DRESS HAD BEEN WAITING FOR HIM!!! 😭

We’re fine. Everything is fine.

Anyway…

We loved giving Rachel time with the dress that morning because it wasn’t just something pretty she bought for the wedding. It had been waiting for this chapter of her life for years.

Her gray Columbia shoes with pink laces brought a completely different energy, and we were equally obsessed with those.

Mountain wedding shoes that are cute and practical?

We love to see it!

Sentimental Elopement Details That Were SO Them

Rachel and Russell absolutely understood the assignment when it came to personal wedding details.

These two are thoughtful gift-givers, and their Lake Minnewanka elopement day was packed with things that meant something beyond simply looking pretty in photographs.

Russell made Rachel a mix CD featuring a photo of the two of them.

Yes, a MIX CD!!!

With their photo on it!!!

And a tiny CD player that looked like a record player!!!

Russell, you sentimental little genius. 💿😭

Be still our millennial hearts.

He also gave her special earrings and an engraved handkerchief featuring one of their sayings together.

Meanwhile, Rachel had created meaningful gifts for Russell too. The leather belt he wore was handmade by her, while the buckle had belonged to his late father. She even added “XOXO Rach” to the belt, giving him something from his past and something from their relationship to carry together.

Russell also made handkerchiefs for Rachel’s parents.

So yes, there were tears.

A lot of happy tears!

And you KNOW we love a happy crier.

“Meet Us in the Mountains” Welcome Gifts

Their guests got spoiled too!

Rachel and Russell put together “Meet Us in the Mountains” tote bags filled with local goodies. Inside were mountain sugar cookies, coffee from Banff Roasting Company, skincare products, a coconut wax candle, and other little treats.

Rather than generic wedding favors, these felt like tiny pieces of the place they had invited everyone to experience with them.

That’s one of our favorite ways to approach destination wedding gifts.

Make them useful. Make them personal. Make them delicious.

Preferably all three!

Getting Ready With the People You Love

Rachel’s parents were woven into the entire morning.

Her dad picked up her flowers and delivered them while she was getting ready. Later, he wandered into the room because he needed help choosing which tie to wear.

Naturally, Rachel was promoted to Official Dad Tie Consultant.

Her mom helped her into the dress, although the tiny button loops decided they wanted to make everyone work for it.

Good thing we travel with an adventure kit!

Out came our button-hook tool, and soon those tiny loops were no match for us.

This is part of why we bring an absurd amount of random stuff to elopements. Hairpins? Yep. Sewing supplies? Obviously. Things you didn’t know existed until your dress suddenly requires one?

Probably! 😂

Their Lake Minnewanka Elopement Ceremony

Why We Recommended Lake Minnewanka

Rachel and Russell wanted their ceremony location to feel BIG.

Not big in terms of guest count.

Big in terms of HOLY CRAP, LOOK AT THOSE MOUNTAINS.

So we recommended Lake Minnewanka for their elopement ceremony.

The wide-open landscape offered exactly the sense of scale they were looking for, with water stretching out beneath towering peaks in every direction.

Rachel and Russell didn’t come to us saying, “This is the exact rock where we need to get married.”

They told us how they wanted the experience to feel.

We took that information, found locations that matched it, presented the options, listened to their feedback, and helped them build the day from there.

Lake Minnewanka checked the boxes that mattered to them: water, mountains, open space, and scenery that felt HUGE.

They also decided to save their first look for the ceremony. Russell wouldn’t see Rachel beforehand, which meant his first glimpse of her would happen as she walked toward him.

Nature’s altar, here we come!

Rachel’s dad accompanied her while everyone helped her safely make her way onto the rock where Russell was waiting.

The sun was out.

The mountains were mountain-ing.

Rachel was walking toward Russell.

Everything was BEAUTIFUL.

And then Banff said: Cute. Here’s some rain!

Getting Married in the Rain at Lake Minnewanka

Clouds rolled in as the ceremony began, and then came the rain.

Did Rachel and Russell care?

Not even a little!

These two were BEAMING.

Their guests gathered around them while they exchanged emotional vows in the rain. There were tears, laughter, an umbrella cameo, and the kind of wedding moment you could never perfectly recreate if you tried.

This is also where having an experienced officiant can be incredibly helpful!

Molly kept the ceremony flowing even as the weather shifted. She helped guide the timing of the vows and rings, kept everyone grounded, and even jumped in with an umbrella when it was needed.

Whether your ceremony is legal or symbolic, having someone there to guide the experience can take so much pressure off the two of you.

You know what you should be thinking about while exchanging vows beside Lake Minnewanka?

The person standing in front of you.

Not what happens next in the ceremony script.

Rain, Sunshine & One Very Perfect Lake Minnewanka Rainbow

After the ceremony, Rachel and Russell signed their marriage documents and everyone took a little break from the rain.

Then, because Banff weather loves drama, the sun came back out.

Of course it did! 😂

We moved into family photographs while the light poured back across the mountains.

And then a rainbow appeared.

Excuse us???

A FREAKING RAINBOW!!! 🌈

Banff, you dramatic little show-off.

And this one hit differently.

Rachel and Russell had been through a major life chapter before reaching their wedding day. When they first contacted us, we had conversations that went beyond photography and timelines. There were experiences they needed space to talk about, and we were grateful they trusted us enough to share them.

Sometimes big things happen in life. There are periods that feel heavy and chapters that ask more of you than you expected to give.

Our job isn’t to pretend those pieces don’t exist when you’re planning a wedding. We want to hold space for the whole story while also cheering unbelievably hard for whatever comes next.

For Rachel and Russell, their elopement represented that next chapter.

So after standing in the rain together, watching the clouds part and seeing a rainbow stretch across their Lake Minnewanka wedding day felt almost ridiculously symbolic.

Rain.

Sunshine.

Rainbow.

A whole new chapter waiting on the other side.

Yeah, we got a little emotional! 🌈🥹

A Banff Elopement Picnic With Family

The next part of the day was a styled picnic created by Captivating Occasions.

Originally, the setup was planned outside. However, everything was pretty wet after the ceremony, so the planner moved the food underneath the backup shelter instead.

And THIS is exactly why we love having a planner involved when an elopement includes more elaborate setups!

We help our couples with locations, timelines, logistics, vendor recommendations, and the overall flow of the experience. Once you’re adding styled tables, food, decor, cake, and multiple guests, though, another set of expert hands can be invaluable.

We physically cannot photograph Rachel and Russell exchanging vows while simultaneously sprinting across Banff to rescue a picnic from the rain.

We have tried having four arms. It has not worked.

But more importantly, we don’t want to be setting up a picnic when we should be with you, documenting your day. We’re your photo + video team, and being fully present means we’re there when the rain clears, the light changes, or a freaking RAINBOW decides to show up.

That’s why, when your plans involve a more elaborate setup, we bring in amazing planners who can handle the details while we focus on what you hired us to do: be there for the moments you can’t plan.

The Captivating Occasions team handled the weather pivot while we stayed focused on Rachel and Russell. Even though everyone ultimately ate under shelter, the outdoor setup was still gorgeous.

We made sure Rachel and Russell had time to see it, take photographs there, and enjoy the space they had dreamed up.

Then came the cake!

A Wedding Cake That Was Basically Art

Rachel is a dessert person.

OUR KIND OF GAL!

Their wedding cake was created by Darci of Kake, and calling it simply “cake” almost feels unfair.

It was ART!!! 🎂✨

Finding vendors who actually fit each couple is one of our favorite parts of Banff elopement planning. Some people want a tiny buttercream cake with zero fuss. Someone else wants their dessert to look like it belongs in a gallery.

Both are correct!

The fun is figuring out which one feels like you and connecting you with the person who can make it happen.

For Rachel and Russell, Darci absolutely nailed it!

From Lake Minnewanka to Sunset at Two Jack Lake

After more rain, food, cake, family time, and plenty of celebrating, we reached another decision point in their full-day Banff elopement.

Sunset photos were still on the timeline.

But these two had already gotten thoroughly rained on, so we checked in.

Still feeling it?

Want some time to warm up?

Ready to call the weather adventure complete?

Their answer was basically:

WE’RE ALREADY WET. LET’S GOOOOOO!!! 😂

Okay then!!!

Back into the mountains we go!

And apparently Banff appreciated the enthusiasm because the sun came back out.

The lake went almost completely still, and Two Jack Lake turned into a mirror.

Even with clouds lingering overhead, the light was beautiful. Mountains reflected across the water while Rachel and Russell wandered along the shoreline.

It was one of those scenes photographers DREAM about!

Why We Recommended Two Jack Lake

Every location in Rachel and Russell’s Banff elopement had a purpose.

Lake Minnewanka gave them the wide, dramatic mountain landscape they wanted for their ceremony. For the later part of the day, we recommended Two Jack Lake because it worked beautifully for sunset, reflections, and the star photographs they hoped to create later that night.

We weren’t simply checking famous Banff locations off a list.

Each spot needed to make sense for their experience.

That distinction matters.

A First Dance Beside the Lake

Once the evening settled in, Rachel and Russell had their first dance on the rocks beside the water.

And these two can MOVE!!! 💃🕺

No choreographed-to-perfection, everybody-watch-your-feet energy here.

Just music, mountains, movement, and two lovers getting their groove on beside a freaking alpine lake!

Their wedding clothes weren’t perfectly pristine anymore. Rachel’s gown already had evidence of a full day adventuring through Banff, exactly as it should.

No keeping the dress spotless for a hanger.

No imaginary wedding-dance rulebook.

Just the two of them having a ridiculously good time together.

As the band Haute & Freddy so beautifully put it: “All the pretty boys and all the pretty girls are freaks.” We haven’t forgotten.

Consider this your official permission slip to dance however the hell you want on your wedding day!

Getting Into an Alpine Lake in a Wedding Dress

Rachel had seen some of our photographs of couples getting into the water and basically went: Yep. I want THAT.

Say less. 😂

So into the alpine lake they went. IN THEIR WEDDING CLOTHES. Because apparently getting rained on wasn’t enough water for one wedding day!

Was the water warm? Absolutely not.

Were the photographs worth it? LOOK AT THEM!!!

They laughed their way through the whole thing. Eventually, Russell was standing there dumping an entire lake out of Rachel’s shoe while they both lost it laughing.

10/10. No notes.

This is exactly what we mean when we say your elopement doesn’t need to feel like one giant photoshoot.

Do the thing. Get wet. Laugh about your soggy shoes.

We’ll photograph what happens!

Why We Love Full-Day Banff Elopements

At this point, you might be thinking:

Surely this wedding day is over.

LOL. NOPE!!!

This is one of the reasons we are absolutely feral for a full-day Banff elopement.

More time doesn’t mean more posing or more activities crammed into your timeline.

Quite the opposite!

Extra coverage gives you room to slow everything down.

Rachel and Russell could spend the morning getting ready without watching the clock. They had their Lake Minnewanka elopement ceremony surrounded by family, ate cake, waited out weather, explored multiple Banff locations, danced beside the lake, and got into the water because the idea sounded fun.

And after voluntarily submerging themselves in an alpine lake, Rachel and Russell did the very reasonable thing:

They went back to the hotel and got warm. 😂

Because full-day coverage means YOU CAN DO THAT.

No rush.

No “we only have 17 minutes left!”

Just a break.

We told them when the stars should be ready, and everyone regrouped later that night.

Ending Their Full-Day Banff Elopement Under the Stars

Stars were another experience Rachel and Russell had hoped to include in their wedding, which was one reason we recommended Two Jack Lake for the evening portion of their day.

After warming up at their accommodation, the two returned when conditions were right. We took test photographs while they stayed cozy in the car with hot drinks.

Once everything was ready, we brought them back outside!

The clouds never disappeared completely, so we didn’t get the clearest night sky Banff has ever produced. But enough stars peeked through to create something beautiful. ✨

And really, it was the perfect ending to their day.

They had started the morning slowly at The Juniper.

Then came their Lake Minnewanka elopement ceremony, sunshine, rain, vows, tears, a rainbow, cake, mirrored mountain reflections, dancing, freezing lake water, a warm-up break, and finally stars.

Try fitting THAT into four hours!!! 😂

Rachel & Russell’s Elopement Review

“Liz and Jason are amazing humans. They answered all the questions, recommended other top notch vendors, kept our timeline on track. The day of the elopement spent 12+ hrs with us and our loved ones (who were also so impressed by them), experiencing all the mountain weather, never batting an eye. Giving us options, checking in throughout to make sure our day was OURS. The icing on the (wedding) cake is that they’re also ridiculously talented. We’re so grateful they’re who documented our elopement, I would entrust them to tell all my most important stories.”

Planning Your Own Lake Minnewanka Elopement?

If Rachel and Russell’s day proves anything, it’s that a Lake Minnewanka elopement can contain approximately 47 different moods and somehow make every single one work.

Sunshine?

Yep!

Rain?

Also yep!

Rainbow?

OF COURSE! 🌈

Turquoise lakes, mountain reflections, cake, happy crying, cold-water magic, dancing, and stars?

Might as well throw those in too!!! ✨

More importantly, their day had room for all of it because we didn’t build a timeline around racing from photograph to photograph.

We built it around actually experiencing the day.

If you’re dreaming about getting married at Lake Minnewanka, start with our Banff Elopement Photography Packages. You’ll find coverage options, sample timelines, and more information about how we help couples plan an experience in the Canadian Rockies.

And if Lake Minnewanka is already sitting at the top of your list?

We get it!!!

Want a Full-Day Lake Minnewanka Elopement Like This One?

Tell us!

Seriously, give us the whole brain dump.

Tell us you want to exchange vows at Lake Minnewanka but hate crowds. Tell us you’re dessert people. Tell us your dog is basically your child. Tell us you want your parents there. Tell us you want to dance like a couple of cool cats beside a lake.. Tell us you saw a photo of someone getting into freezing water in their wedding dress and immediately thought, YEP, THAT ONE.

We want the weirdly specific stuff!!!

Because that’s the stuff that turns a Banff elopement into your Banff elopement.

Once we know what you’re excited about, we’ll find and recommend locations that fit. Then we’ll help build a timeline around your priorities, connect you with vendors who make sense for your vision, plan around mountain weather as best humans possibly can, and leave enough breathing room for the spontaneous stuff.

Because sometimes you plan a Lake Minnewanka elopement, the forecast gives you rain, and Banff decides to throw in a freaking rainbow instead.
