Planning a Moraine Lake elopement in Banff National Park? Samantha and Jacob’s full-day summer adventure included an intimate Lake Louise ceremony, vows overlooking Moraine Lake, white cowboy boots, champagne in the mountains, a little rain, a first dance with their favorite people, and plenty of time to actually enjoy all of it!
Samantha and Jacob knew pretty quickly that a traditional wedding wasn’t what they wanted. They wanted to travel somewhere incredible, bring their closest family and friends along for the adventure, and still have plenty of time to themselves without feeling stressed about what they were supposed to be doing next.
And if there were giant mountains and ridiculously blue lakes involved? Even better!!!
Their wedding day brought all of that together with an intimate ceremony at Lake Louise followed by vows, champagne, dancing, and exploring at Moraine Lake.
Two iconic Banff lakes.
Twelve hours.
One VERY full wedding adventure!

Meet Samantha + Jacob!
Samantha and Jacob are from Scranton, Pennsylvania, and their story started online before their first date at a local ice cream shop. A pretty great first-date choice, if you ask us!
Since then, they’ve built a life that has room for both big adventures and the quiet stuff. They love traveling and hiking, but they’re just as happy cooking, reading together, or hanging out at home with their two dogs, Charlie and Clover.
And Charlie actually played a VERY important role in the proposal!
Jacob planned a photoshoot with their dogs and tied a bandana around Charlie that said, “Will you marry me?” Samantha got a proposal involving her dogs AND photographs of the whole thing?!
Excellent work, Jacob. No notes.

Why They Chose an Intimate Banff Wedding
When Samantha and Jacob started thinking about their wedding, they knew they wanted something they could actually enjoy. A huge traditional celebration wasn’t calling their names, so they decided to turn their wedding into an experience instead.
They still wanted their closest family and friends there, but they also wanted time alone together. They wanted to travel, explore the mountains, and spend the day celebrating without feeling like they were constantly moving on to the next wedding tradition.
And this is something we wish more couples knew about eloping!
You don’t have to choose between a giant traditional wedding and running into the mountains completely alone. Your parents can come, along with your siblings, your best friends, or whoever you can’t imagine celebrating without! Spend part of the day surrounded by your people, then carve out another part to adventure together.
There are no Elopement Police hiding behind a tree with a clipboard.
Thank goodness!
For Samantha and Jacob, combining Lake Louise and Moraine Lake gave them the big Canadian Rockies experience they had been dreaming about while still keeping the celebration intimate.

A Slow Wedding Morning With Family
Samantha and Jacob started their wedding morning at their Airbnb surrounded by family. They wanted this part of the day to feel relaxed, so we built in plenty of time for everyone to hang out while they got ready.
Samantha got ready downstairs while Jacob stayed upstairs, which meant we could photograph both of them separately without accidentally ruining their first look. Very sophisticated operation happening over here!
While Samantha had her hair and makeup done, we photographed her details and captured all those little moments happening around her. Her mom was there getting ready too, family wandered in and out, and nobody had to turn the morning into a frantic getting-ready marathon.
That’s one of our favorite things about a 12-hour elopement.
We have TIME!
Instead of trying to squeeze hair and makeup, details, getting dressed, family moments, and a first look into one frantic hour, the morning gets to be part of the experience too.
White Cowboy Boots in the Canadian Rockies
We HAVE to talk about Samantha’s shoes.
White cowboy boots in the Canadian Rockies!!!
YES.
We love a bold wedding shoe, and these were so freaking cute with her dress. Our adventure-photographer disclaimer still stands, though: if you’re doing any real hiking on your wedding day, wear proper hiking shoes and bring the fun ones along.
Your ankles will thank you, and you still get your cowboy boot moment once we reach the good stuff. Everybody wins!
A Little Wedding-Morning Moment With Dad
Samantha also had an Irish handkerchief as a gift for her dad. Later, he helped her with her cowboy boots before the two of them got a quiet moment together.
These are exactly the kinds of interactions we don’t want to rush past.
Yes, we’re going to photograph the giant mountains. Obviously!!! But your dad kneeling down to help you into your wedding boots matters too.

A Family First Look Before the First Look
Once Samantha was ready, it was time for everyone to see her! She came down the staircase while her family waited below, creating this adorable little family reveal before she saw Jacob.
Meanwhile, Jacob had to stay strategically hidden away.
Cue us becoming wedding-day traffic controllers. Everyone downstairs! Jacob stays THERE! Nobody wander into the wrong room!
Once the family had their moment, we cleared the space so Samantha and Jacob could have theirs.

Samantha + Jacob’s Private First Look
Samantha and Jacob wanted a private first look before heading into Banff National Park. We considered doing it outside, but summer had one tiny surprise waiting for us.
BUGS. Lots of them.
Romantically staring into your future spouse’s eyes loses a little something when you’re both aggressively swatting mosquitoes away from your faces.
Luckily, their Airbnb had a beautiful staircase that gave us the perfect alternative. Everyone gave them some space, Samantha walked toward Jacob, and they finally got their quiet moment together before the adventure really began.
This is a small example of something that happens constantly on elopement days: we adjust!
The prettiest option on paper isn’t always the best option once we’re actually there. Weather changes, bugs happen, people change their minds, and sometimes a different idea simply feels better in the moment.
Cool! We work with what the day gives us.
First look complete, it was time for the mountains!

An Intimate Lake Louise Wedding Ceremony
Why Choose Lake Louise for an Elopement?
Samantha and Jacob wanted those classic Canadian Rockies views: big mountains, bright blue water, and the kind of scenery that makes you wonder whether someone turned the saturation up in real life.
Lake Louise absolutely delivered!
Surrounded by their closest family and friends, Samantha and Jacob had an intimate wedding ceremony overlooking one of Banff National Park’s most recognizable landscapes. Even better, Samantha’s dad got to officiate!
Can a Family Member Officiate Your Banff Elopement?
Samantha and Jacob handled the legal side of their marriage back home in the United States, which meant their ceremony in Canada could be focused entirely on the experience itself.
It also meant Samantha’s dad could lead it!
For couples traveling internationally for an elopement, it can be worth exploring whether you want to complete the legal side of your marriage at your destination or handle the paperwork at home and have a symbolic ceremony during your trip.
There’s no prize for making your wedding logistics more complicated than they need to be.
For Samantha and Jacob, this approach meant someone incredibly important to them could stand beside them while they exchanged vows at Lake Louise.
Pretty freaking special!

From Lake Louise to Their Moraine Lake Elopement
One ridiculously blue lake down.
One to go!!!
MORAINE LAKE TIME.
Moraine Lake was a huge part of Samantha and Jacob’s vision. They loved the color of the water, the massive surrounding peaks, and that unmistakable Canadian Rockies landscape.
This was also one of the reasons a 12-hour wedding day made sense for them. Combining Lake Louise and Moraine Lake into one elopement means accounting for more than photography time. Transportation takes time. Getting everyone where they need to be takes time. Walking to viewpoints takes time. And, perhaps most importantly, snacks take time!
Building enough room into their timeline meant we didn’t have to treat these incredible places like boxes we were racing to check off. Samantha and Jacob could actually experience both locations instead of spending their wedding day watching the clock.

How Do You Get to Moraine Lake for an Elopement?
If you’re planning your own Moraine Lake elopement, this is a BIG thing to know: getting there requires some advance planning.
You can’t simply hop in your rental car and drive yourself up Moraine Lake Road. Couples need to arrange an approved transportation option, such as a shuttle, and when guests are coming along, those logistics become even more important.
How many people are joining you? When does everyone need to arrive? How does transportation fit with the rest of your Banff elopement timeline? How much time do you actually need once you get there?
These aren’t the glamorous parts of planning a Moraine Lake wedding, but figuring them out ahead of time is what lets the glamorous part happen without chaos!
That’s why we work through logistics during the planning process rather than leaving couples to figure everything out once they’re standing in wedding clothes in the Canadian Rockies.
Why Choose Moraine Lake for an Elopement?
We have two words:
THAT. BLUE.
Seriously!!!
Moraine Lake is one of the most recognizable places in Banff National Park for a reason. Samantha and Jacob were especially drawn to the turquoise water and the enormous mountain views surrounding it, so once they arrived, everyone grabbed their snacks and made their way toward the Rockpile viewpoint.
And yes, Moraine Lake is popular. Very popular!
We’re not going to pretend this is some secret little spot nobody knows about.
However, your date, timing, and plans can make a big difference in how you experience such a popular Banff elopement location. Samantha and Jacob got married on a weekday in August, and while other visitors were around, we still found moments that felt completely separate from everything happening around them.
And then it was vow time!

Saying Their Vows at the Moraine Lake Rockpile
Samantha and Jacob had already shared their ceremony with family at Lake Louise, but they wanted another moment at Moraine Lake to exchange personal vows and rings.
Originally, they pictured this part of the day a little differently. Once they were there, though, they decided they were perfectly happy having their people nearby.
So they went with it!
We LOVE this because your elopement timeline is a plan. It is not a legally binding contract with Past You.
Maybe you planned private vows and suddenly want your people there. Or perhaps you thought you wanted everyone around, only to realize you need 20 minutes alone. And if the timeline says portraits but you’re hungry and want cake first?
EAT THE CAKE!!
The whole point of creating a wedding day around the two of you is that you’re allowed to make decisions based on what actually feels good while you’re living it.
Rock, Paper, Scissors… Who Goes First?!
Now we arrive at one of our FAVORITE moments from Samantha and Jacob’s entire Moraine Lake elopement.
They were standing above one of the most iconic lakes in Canada, surrounded by mountains and about to read deeply emotional vows to each other.
Naturally, they needed a highly official method for determining who would go first.
Rock. Paper. Scissors.
PERFECT.
Your vows can be emotional AND you can play rock, paper, scissors five seconds before reading them. You can cry and immediately start laughing. You can have this huge, meaningful moment without suddenly becoming completely different people because it’s your wedding day.
Be weird, get goofy, cry your freaking eyes out, and then laugh five seconds later. Just be YOU!!! 😂

What Happens if It Rains During a Moraine Lake Elopement?
Well… you get married anyway!
Because this is the Canadian Rockies, and mountain weather is going to do whatever mountain weather wants.
As Samantha and Jacob prepared to exchange their vows, clouds moved in and the rain started. A few people didn’t have rain gear, which meant it was time for the adventure kit to make an appearance.
Out came the emergency ponchos!
At this point, our adventure kit is basically a Mary Poppins bag. Need a poncho? Got it. Random wedding emergency? We probably have something for that.
The rain didn’t stop anything. Samantha and Jacob exchanged their vows and rings while their people watched, cheered them on, and celebrated around them.
Then came the champagne!
Champagne at Moraine Lake
We LOVE a champagne pop because they’re unpredictable, slightly chaotic, and the wind almost always decides it deserves a role too.
Samantha and Jacob popped a bottle overlooking Moraine Lake while everyone celebrated together. At one point, Samantha’s veil caught the wind as she poured champagne and Jacob drank straight from the bottle.
YESSSSS.
Afterward, everyone had time to hang out while we photographed the little in-between moments happening around them. There were hugs, laughter, family photos, friends talking, and everyone getting to enjoy the fact that they had just watched Samantha and Jacob exchange vows above one of the bluest lakes in Canada.
Casual weekday stuff!

Is Moraine Lake Crowded in August?
If you’re considering a summer Moraine Lake elopement, crowds are probably somewhere on your list of questions.
And yes, summer is busy!
July and August are peak season in Banff National Park, and Moraine Lake is one of its most popular destinations. We’re not going to tell you we know a magic spell that makes everyone else disappear.
What we CAN do is plan strategically.
Why Consider a Weekday Moraine Lake Elopement?
One of the things that worked in Samantha and Jacob’s favor was getting married on a weekday.
There were still visitors around because, well… Moraine Lake in August. But we could also find quieter pockets where their experience felt much more intimate than you might expect from such a famous location.
Later, Samantha and Jacob found a spot closer to the trees for their first dance. Even with other visitors nearby, that little corner suddenly felt like theirs.
That’s what we’re looking for!
If you tell us you want an iconic Banff location but privacy is also incredibly important to you, we’re going to talk through the tradeoffs. Maybe that means a weekday or a different time of day. Maybe it means we recommend somewhere entirely different that gives you the same feeling with fewer people around.
The goal isn’t to choose a location because everyone else has photographed it.
It’s to find the location and plan that work for YOU.

A First Dance During Their Moraine Lake Elopement
After their vows, champagne, and family time, Samantha and Jacob got a little more time with four of their closest people.
Then the music came out!
They found a quieter spot tucked closer to the trees and started their first dance. Before long, their friends jumped in too, and suddenly this sweet little first-dance moment became a tiny mountain dance party.
We were VERY into it.
This is one of the reasons we don’t want to over-schedule every second of an elopement. We need room for things to happen!
You cannot put “5:47 PM: spontaneous dance party with best friends” on a timeline and expect it to hit the same. 😂 Sometimes you turn on music, your friends jump in, everyone starts dancing, and THAT becomes one of the moments you remember most.
The Little Moments Matter Too
Eventually, everyone started making their way back down the Rockpile Trail toward the shuttle, but we weren’t done photographing just because the big events were over.
We LOVE the in-between parts of an elopement day.
Everyone is talking about what just happened. Someone is helping with a dress. People are a little damp, a little tired, probably hungry again, and very freaking happy.
At one point, Jacob got chilly and wrapped something around his head. Then his mom joined him.
Naturally, we photographed it. 😂
These are often the photographs you didn’t know you wanted. They’re not necessarily the dramatic ones you print six feet tall for your living room, but they’re the ones that make you look at each other five years later and say, “OH MY GOD, I forgot about that!”
Give us the epic mountain portraits AND the ridiculous little moments.
We want both!
Why 12-Hour Banff Elopement Coverage Worked for Their Day
Samantha and Jacob’s Lake Louise and Moraine Lake elopement is such a good example of why we love full-day coverage.
And no, 12 hours does NOT mean we photograph you posing for 12 straight hours.
That sounds terrible for everyone involved!!
More coverage means more room to actually live your wedding day.
Samantha and Jacob had time for a slow morning with their families, separate getting-ready photos, a private first look, and an intimate Lake Louise wedding ceremony. Then they could travel to Moraine Lake, walk to the viewpoint, exchange vows, pop champagne, spend time with their people, take photographs, dance, and eventually make their way back down the Rockpile Trail.
There was room for transportation and weather, plus plenty of time for people to eat, walk, talk, laugh, and breathe!
That breathing room made all the difference.
That is the magic of a full-day elopement.
More coverage doesn’t necessarily mean doing MORE.
Sometimes it simply means giving everything you already want enough time to actually enjoy it!

Ending Their Full-Day Banff Wedding Adventure
Eventually, it was time to catch the shuttle and say goodbye to Moraine Lake. Samantha and Jacob headed back to spend the rest of the evening with their family, where dinner and a hot tub were waiting.
A pretty freaking great way to end a giant mountain wedding day!
And we love that their adventure ended this way because an adventure elopement does not have to mean hiking until midnight, dangling off a cliff, or filling every second with another activity.
Adventure can mean traveling somewhere you’ve always wanted to see and exchanging vows beside Lake Louise. It can mean standing above Moraine Lake in the rain, popping champagne, and dancing with your best friends beside the trees.
Then it can mean getting into comfy clothes, eating dinner with your family, and doing absolutely nothing.
There is room for BOTH!

Planning Your Own Moraine Lake Elopement?
Ready to Plan Your Own Moraine Lake Elopement?
If Moraine Lake is currently sitting at the top of your elopement Pinterest board…
We understand.
LOOK AT IT!!!
But planning a Moraine Lake elopement involves a little more than choosing a ridiculously pretty viewpoint. There’s transportation, access, time of year, crowds, guest logistics, weather, and figuring out how Moraine Lake fits into the rest of your Banff wedding day.
If you’re still in the how the heck does any of this work? stage, our Banff National Park Elopement Planning Guide is a very good place to start.
And if you also want Lake Louise?
Okayyyy, now we have even more to talk about!
You might want to start by exploring some of our favorite Banff elopement locations, then take a peek at our guide to the best time of year to get married in Banff. The location you love, the experience you want, and the season you choose all play together, especially when you’re dreaming about those bright blue lakes!
Then comes the fun part: making it yours.
Maybe that means bringing your closest people along, while still carving out a few hours that belong to just the two of you. Or maybe you want champagne overlooking Moraine Lake, a first dance with your best friends, and enough time to experience Lake Louise AND Moraine Lake without turning your wedding day into The Amazing Race. 😂
That last one is exactly why we’re such big fans of full-day Banff elopement coverage.
You don’t need to contact us with the locations chosen, transportation figured out, vendors booked, and a color-coded timeline ready to go. In fact, figuring all of that out is part of what we do as Banff elopement photographers!
Come to us with the part you do know.
I’d keep the punchy list feeling, just vary the openings:
We want blue water.
Our family has to be there.
This needs to feel like an adventure.
We want to see as much as possible without spending the whole day rushing.
Also, we have approximately 700 Pinterest saves and zero clue what’s actually possible.
PERFECT!!!
That gives us somewhere to start.
From there, we can turn all those ideas into a wedding day that actually makes sense in the mountains, with plenty of room left for the champagne pops, dance parties, unexpected rain, and whatever else Banff decides to throw into the mix. 🏔️✨

Ready to Plan a Moraine Lake Elopement?
Maybe you already know you want Moraine Lake. Maybe Lake Louise has been sitting on your bucket list forever. Or maybe you just know you want to get married somewhere that makes you stop for a second and go, holy shit, we’re actually here.
That’s plenty to start with!
You don’t need to know which shuttle to book, how long you’ll need at each location, where to go when the weather turns, or how to turn a handful of ideas into an actual wedding day. That’s the stuff we can figure out together.
What we care about first is how you want this thing to feel.
Do you want your family there when you say your vows? A few hours to disappear with your favorite people afterward? Champagne on a mountaintop? A first dance that turns into everyone dancing? A quiet moment beside the lake when it finally hits you that YOU JUST GOT MARRIED?!
Start there.
We’ll help you turn it into a day that works in real life, not just one that looks pretty on Pinterest.
And if Banff decides to add rain, wind, or a little mountain chaos along the way?
Well… those usually make pretty freaking good stories
TALK SOON,
LIZ AND JASON
